The Bulldog
The Bulldogs is undeniably one of the most lovable dog breeds in the world. They have a look all their own with the classic sour mug and heavy wrinkles on a big, beautiful head.
Bulldogs were bred from Roman war dogs and references to the "broad-mouthed dogs of Britain" go back to the 1400s, if not earlier! They were originally bred for bull-baiting, an essential task in early cattle breeding, however bull-baiting skills were utilized by gamblers in England to use the dogs for bull fighting, which was banned in the early 1800s. Without a job to do, the Bulldog nearly became extinct but for a few dedicated individuals in England and in the United States. Bulldog Club of America was the first breed club established in the US and the Bulldog was the first breed recognized by the AKC in the year 1886.
Today, the Bulldog one of the most recognizable breeds, adored for their loyal companionship, tenacity and loving demeanor. No two Bulldogs are alike, they are so loved that they are the most common mascot on college campuses across the United States.
Bulldogs are bred to a very specific standard and anything else is simply something other than a purebred Bulldog. One of the greatest threats to the breed today is fad-color (or fraud-color) breeding which results in immeasurable health issues for these beautiful dogs. Bulldogs are found in the following colors:
"The color of coat should be uniform, pure of its kind and brilliant.
Colors are red, white, fawn, fallow, or any combination of the foregoing.
Patterns and markings may include brindle, piebald, ticking, black masks, black tipping, and a minimal amount of black in piebalds.
All other colors or markings are a disqualification. The merle pattern is a disqualification."
Any color or reference to Blue or Merle is not acceptable and comes with extremely harmful genetic health risks. If you come across a breeder advertising these colors, run in the opposite direction!
We do have litters of Bulldogs available on occasion. Please contact us if you have interest in a Bulldog puppy. We are proud members of the Bulldog Club of America and American Kennel Club local breed and all breed clubs.
